An Ulster Title, medals & PBs for Lakelanders at Ulster Long Course Championship
A squad of 11 swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club attended the Ulster Age Group and Senior LC Championships at the Bangor Aurora Leisure Complex on 3rd, 4th & 5th May. Competitors from across 32 clubs in Ulster met the tough qualification standards to take part in this key meet over three days, targeting Ulster podium spots, and those important Summer National qualification times.
The highlight of the meet for the Lakelanders was to come from the 800m Freestyle event with 15-year-old Hannah Lynch competing in the 15 - 16 age group returning to Fermanagh as Ulster Champion. Hannah further displayed her strength in this stroke with silver medals in both the 400m and 1500m events. Hannah landed on the podium yet again after further slashing her PB in the 200m Backstroke final to claim another silver medal. Hannah also finished as the second fastest 15 year old in the 100m Backstroke, ranking 7th overall.
There was a further medal home to Enniskillen with 16 year old Kate McDade who swam a new PB to secure a silver medal in a very tight finish to the 100m Breaststroke final. She also peeled a whopping 10 seconds off her 400m Freestyle PB to finish 5th, adding a fifth qualifying time to her list for the Summer Nationals in Dublin.
Kiril Chursin maintained his PBs in the 50m Freestyle and the 100m Breaststroke. He clocked a new PB in the 50m Breaststroke, earning a place in an exciting final where he hit the wall the 4th fastest in the 18 year old category.
Sophie Hanna (12) swam a new PB in the 50m Freestyle, ensuring her qualification for the Irish Summer Nationals in Limerick.
Swimming in the 17 & over category James Mongan hit the wall as the 4th fastest 17 year old in the 100m Backstroke. He was delighted to earn a place in the exciting 200m Backstroke final where he finished 2nd fastest 17 year old, ranking 4th over all with a qualification time for the National Competition.
Martha McCreesh (13) claimed new PBs in the 50m Freestyle and the 100m Breaststroke events, ensuring her qualification for Summer Nationals in Limerick in the latter.
Crea Mullen (12) secured a new PB and a qualifying time for Summer Nationals in Limerick in the 50m Freestyle event.
Ava Neal (14) carried an injury into the Meet and was pleased to maintain her PBs in the 100m & 200m Breaststroke, 400m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley.
Erin Salcedo (14) clocked a new PB in the 50m Freestyle and maintained her PBs in the 200m Freestyle & Breaststroke.
Younger sister Keira Salcedo (12) claimed a new PB in the 100m Breaststroke and qualified for an exciting 200m Breaststroke final, finishing 6th overall on a new PB.
Emma Speer (13) had a very successful weekend. She held her PB in the 100m Freestyle and secured a 3.54 second PB in the 100m Breaststroke finishing 7th in her age group. Emma was delighted to drop 7.61 seconds off her 200m Breaststroke PB to hit the wall 2nd fastest 13 year old.
Club Chairperson Aideen Speer praised the performances over the weekend, a testament to the excellent work of our coaching team lead by Head Coach Ben Wiffen. Returning home with an Ulster Title, 6 medals and numerous PBs shows the progress the swimmers are making. With some of our swimmers competing at this level for the first time, the opportunity to swim in finals has provided valuable experience for upcoming Summer National events. Many thanks to Swim Ulster for another well-run event and special thanks to the many parent volunteers without whom these events cannot take place.
