Aquasprinters Triumph over Swim Belfast Squad

Enniskillen Lakelanders had a triumphant start to the 2025 Aquasprint season with a strong win against Swim Belfast in the historic Templemore Baths in Belfast on Saturday.

A team of 37 Junior Lakelanders aged 8 to 13, led by newly appointed captains Charles Armstrong and Crea Mullen, travelled to Belfast for the first meet of the fast paced, fun and competitive league sponsored by Forest Feast. The annual Swim Ulster competition offers an opportunity for younger swimmers to race in all four strokes, in both individual and relay events, over 25m sprints. The points based league involves 25 clubs from across the Province competing in one-on-one dual style battles and is often the first competitive outing for many young swimmers.

First up was the exciting medley team relays, where the Lakelanders dominated the pool, winning three of the four mixed team events. The Group A team of Orlaith Howell, Joseph McKenna, Mollie Kate Brewster and Finn Coyle stormed home to claim the Lakelanders’ first win of the night with a massive 11 second lead over the second placed Swim Belfast team.  Lakelanders’ Group B team of Jakub Mikievicz Lumayad, Niamh Howell, April Huang and Oliver Elliott also won their relay confidently with a huge lead while the Group D team of Crea Mullen, Charles Armstong, Sophie Hanna and Conor Collins also claimed the win in their relay.

Next were the individual events, starting with backstroke where the Lakelanders secured a total six wins, by Mollie Kate Brewster, Charlie Brewster, April Huang, Jakub Mikievicz Lumayad, Michael Carron and Crea Mullen. Second place points were also won by Niamh Howell and Sophie Hanna while Natalie Swidani and Oliver Elliott added points to the scoreboard for third place.

The Lakelanders also dominated the individual breastroke events with impressive first place wins by Mollie Kate Brewser, Joseph McKenna, Niamh Howell, Jakub Mikievicz Lumayad, Michael Carron and Kiera Salcedo. Finn Coyle, April Huang, James McSorley and Charles Armstrong also clocked up valuable points for placing second in their races.

The individual Butterfly events delivered four brilliant wins for the Lakelanders, with Mollie Kate Brewster, Joseph McKenna, Niamh Howell and Crea Mullen each hitting the wall first in their races. Finn Coyle, April Huang, Jakub Mikievicz Lumayad, Sophie Hanna and Charles Armstrong secured super second place points while Owen Donnelly, Natalie Swidani and James McSorley delivered additional points in third place.

An incredible six out of eight wins were secured by the Lakelanders in the individual freestyle races with Mollie Kate Brester, Joseph McKenna, Niamh Howell, Jakub Mikievicz Lumayad, Michael Carron and Crea Mullen all winning their events. Second place points were also scored by Finn Coyle, April Huang, James McSorley and Sophie Hanna while Emily Irvine, Oliver Elliott, Natalie Swidani and Charles Armstrong ably delivered third places.

The competition wound up with the fast and furious freestyle relay events where the Lakelanders A and B teams won their races ably. An intense four lane battle took place during the final race of the night with the timekeepers declaring Swim Belfast winners of the last relay event by three hundredths of a second.

The overall results were eventually announced, Enniskillen Lakelanders 222, Swim Belfast 178, with the Lakelanders winning 28 of the 40 events.  Mollie Kate Brewster and Michael Carron were named as the Lakelanders’ ‘Most Valuable Swimmers’ on the night, each having scored an impressive 16 points.

Team captains Crea Mullen and Charles Armstrong thanked Swim Belfast for hosting the event and for putting up a good competition. They also thanked Lakelanders coaches Ben Wiffen, Claire Morris and Aideen Speer for preparing them so well for the competition and are looking forward to meeting Belfast Olympia at their next meet in the Aquasprints League, at home, hopefully at the Lakeland Forum, in the weeks ahead.
