Enniskillen Lakelanders privileged to host Swimming Superstar Wiffen Twins
02 Jan 2023
Many Enniskillen Lakelanders swimmers were privileged to attend swimming stroke clinics with Daniel & Nathan Wiffen last week.
Identical twins Nathan and Daniel are the younger brothers of Enniskillen Lakelanders’ Head Coach Ben Wiffen who was instrumental in bringing this exciting training opportunity to Lakelander swimmers in Enniskillen.
Backstroke is Nathan’s preference and Daniel excels in Freestyle. It was the 1500m Freestyle event where Daniel secured a silver medal in the Birmingham hosted 2022 Commonwealth Games and most recently became the first Irishman to slam the 800m Freestyle European record, only 2.5 seconds off the world record! Nathan has also just this past month became the second Irishman to break the 15 minute barrier in 1500m Freestyle.
The 21-year-old star swimmers are in second year at famed sporting school of excellence, Loughborough University. Naturally they are there due to the top quality coaching and sports facilities, but also because their courses are considered amongst the best in the UK and Ireland. In similar fashion to their swimming, Daniel and Nathan’s course content overlaps with Daniel pursuing a degree in IT with Business Management and Nathan studying Computing with Management.
Nathan points to being a multiple Irish gold medallist and international meet finalist in Edinburgh as his top achievements to date. Daniel says it’s his Commonwealth silver and a World Championship finalist place in Budapest 2022 that are his proudest moments. Also held in high esteem for Daniel is being a multiple Irish Record holder and a Tokyo Olympian.
Next target for both is the Paris 2024 Olympics. Nathan hopes to qualify for his first Olympic Games and Daniel is aiming for a medal in Paris and before that a podium finish at the 2023 World Championships in Japan.
Daniel & Nathan conducted special Swimming Clinics with Enniskillen Lakelanders on Thursday & Friday 29th & 30th December, taking time with the swimmers, generously giving tips and pointers on their swimming technique and how to tweak and improve. It was just lovely to see the Lakelander swimmers feeling so at ease in their company also, asking the questions they wanted to; such valuable and inspirational sessions with two absolute gentlemen; both of them a true credit to swimming, their big brother Ben and indeed to the Wiffen family, who all must rightfully be extremely proud of them both.
Heartfelt thanks to both Daniel & Nathan for their generosity with their time, expertise and many invaluable pieces of advice!
Thank you to our Head Coach Ben and all those who made these very special sessions a reality for our club.
