Last weekend saw 6 swimmers from the Enniskillen Lakelanders compete in the Ulster Short Course Championships held at Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre, Belfast. With almost 1,000 entries the three-day meet was approached by the local swimmers with confidence.

Ellie Dunlop (13) the youngest Lakelander to compete, was delighted with her performance at her first Ulster Short Course Championships.  In the 200m Breaststroke heats Ellie had a super swim gaining a smashing PB and securing a place in the final on Friday evening. Ellie produced a very strong swim in the final to finish with another PB in 7th place overall, the fastest 13-year-old girl in Ulster securing her qualification time for the Irish National Winter Championships in Dublin. In the 200m Individual Medley (IM) Ellie used the opportunity to build on her experience at this level of competition. Ellie finished off her meet with the 100m Breaststroke, where she again executed a fantastic race gaining another PB. Ellie finishing in 10th place also as the fastest 13-year-old girl in Ulster, just missing out on a place in the final.

Jamie Lannon (14) also impressed at his debut performance at the Ulster ShortCourse championship. Jamie achieved consistent PBs across his 6 chosen events. Jamie finished the meet as second fastest 14-year-old Ulster boy in the 200m Breaststroke and impressively the fastest 14-year-old boy in the 50m & 100m Breaststroke,100M IM, 50m & 100m Freestyle. The highlight for Jamie was smashing his 50m Freestyle time breaking the 26 second barrier in a super fast time of 25.93 seconds. Jamie now qualifies to compete in the 100m IM and 50m Breaststroke at the Irish National Winter Championships in December.

Another debut at the Ulster Short Course Championships for 15-year-old Hayden James, where he competed in the 400m Freestyle. Hayden gained great race experience against an experienced field finishing his race as fourth 15-year-old, no doubt the experience of this event will stand to him in the coming months.

As an IM swimmer Izzy Lannon (16) chose to compete across 5 events to compliment her race execution. Tuning her skills Izzy achieved PBs and top 6 16-year-old finishes in the 50m Butterfly, 100m Breaststroke and 100m Freestyle events and finished as second fastest 16-year-old in the 100m Backstroke. The highlight for Izzy was the 400m IM final achieving an impressive 6 second PB finishing as the second 16-year-old home and 6th place overall.

At her first meet of the season, Emilie Reihill (16) executed her race plan effectively to produce a strong swim in the 200m Freestyle. Emilie was pleased to achieve a PB and finish as fourth fastest 16-year-old girl, a great start to her competitive season.

Anna McDade (16) had a busy two days at her first meet of the season returning from illness to produce strong performances across 5 events. The highlights from Anna were to be in her favoured Breaststroke events with Anna securing a place in the final in both the 50m & 100m events. A good performance in the 100m Breaststroke saw Anna improve her ranking from seventh to finish in an impressive fourth place, the second fastest 16-year-old.  The final of the 50m Breaststroke event was to see Anna on top form securing a PB and finishing in fifth place again as the second fastest 16-year-old. This performance also secured Anna’s qualification time for the Irish National Winter Championships. Anna was also pleased with her performances in the 50m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle and showing her versatility with a PB in the 100m IM where she also secured a place in the final, finishing as the second fastest 16-year-old.

Gala secretary Michelle Reihill praised the swimmers performances, this is an encouraging start to the season for our senior swimmers, with numerous PBs secured and new Irish Winter Championship qualification times. Many thanks to the coaching team of Fionna Orr and Ben Wiffen for their guidance and support across the weekend, and to all our parent volunteers who helped out across the three day event.
