
Swim Ulster Senior Schools' Championships 2023

The Swim Ulster Schools Cup & Championships 2023 took place on Saturday 4th February at Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex Bangor. Over 830 swimmers from 121 schools across the province of Ulster took part in the one day event. Five Fermanagh schools were part of the action with 23 local swimmers taking part, eight of whom were swimmers from Enniskillen Royal Grammar School.

Ellie Dunlop (14) was delighted to bring home silver for ERGS along with a new PB in the 100m Breaststroke. Ellie has now qualified for the Ulster Interprovincial Team 2023 who will swim at the Irish Schools Interpro Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin in March.
Russell Mikiewicz Lumayad (13) knocked almost 2 seconds off his PB in the 100m Backstroke and he followed that with another PB in the 100m Freestyle event.
Jessica Miller (12) shaved almost 15 seconds off her 100m Breaststroke PB, then picked up another 2 second PB in the 100m Freestyle race.
James Mongan (16) touched the wall as the third fastest 16 year old in the 100m Backstroke, also picking up a new PB in the event. He went on to maintain his time in the 100m Breaststroke.
Younger brother Ryan Mongan (13) was delighted to see he had taken 3 seconds off his 100m Breaststroke time. He then went on to swim to his PB in the 100m Freestyle race.
Maeve Rolston McAuliffe (12) knocked almost 12 seconds off her time in the 100m Freestyle and set herself a new target to beat in the 200m Individual Medley after an impressive first swim in the event.
Erin Salcedo (12) touched the wall with a 2 second PB in the 100m Breaststroke and maintained her PB in the 100m Freestyle race.
Sarah Speer (14) was very happy with her performance, securing a 2 second PB in both 100m Breaststroke and 100m Freestyle.
Sarah, Ellie, Erin and Jessica did the school proud in the girls’ Medley Relay race, placing 3rd in their heat; whilst Sarah, Jessica, Erin and Maeve proved a strong team in the girls’ Freestyle relay race.
The event was also a great success for Mount Lourdes swimmers with 1 Silver and 1 Bronze Medal, numerous PBs and a place secured for Irish Schools Interprovincial Championships.
Representing Mount Lourdes Grammar School in Group 5 (Juniors 12 – 14 year old category) were Emily Stewart (12) , Tori Reid (12), Ava Neal (13), Aoife Carey (13) & her twin sister Eimear Carey (13) .

Emily got the event off to a great start in the 100m Breaststroke and was pleased with her performance with a fantastic 8.03 second PB. Tori also had a successful swim in the 100m Freestyle & 100m Breaststroke with a 5.42 second PB.
Ava was happy with her swim in the 100m Breaststroke earning herself a 1.76 second PB and followed this with another strong swim in her favourite stroke the 100m Freestyle, also producing a PB of 4.67 seconds.
Aoife competed in the 100m Breaststroke and had a successful 100m Freestyle with 4.90 second PB.
Eimear also had a 2 great swims in the 100m Breaststroke with a 4.02 seconds PB & 100m Freestyle producing a 1.98 second PB.
Representing Mount Lourdes Grammar School in Group 6 (15- 16 years) were Anna Mc Dade (16) & Izzy Lannon (16)

Anna Mc Dade (16), in a return to form swam a PB in 200m IM to place 4th.
In her favoured Breaststroke, a strong swim in the heats secured a place in the senior final.
An impressive performance in a highly competitive race resulted in a well deserved PB and silver medal.
For the second year running , Anna has qualified for the Ulster Schools Squad and is looking forward to representing MLE at Irish Schools Interprovincial Championships.
Izzy Lannon (16), had a fantastic meet at the Ulster schools, finishing top 10 in all her events in the 17 and over category.
The 100m Backcrawl saw Izzy qualify from preliminaries to Backcrawl final, finishing 7th overall.
After a steady mid-distance swim, Izzy finished 5th fastest 17yr old in the 400m Freestyle event.
After an incredible technical swim, Izzy was thrilled to win the bronze medal in her favoured event the 200m IM.
The Junior Mount Lourdes girls also competed in 200m Medley Relays, with Tori, Emily, Ava & Eimear producing great swims in each race.
Six boys from St Michael’s College also took part in the Senior Schools’ Championship in Bangor.
Competing in 2 events each against the top schools in Ulster, the boys represented the school with pride.
This was a first taste of Senior Schools competitive swimming for three year 8 boys and they relished the occasion:
Darragh Collins (12) came away delighted with his swims in the 12-14 age group. He achieved a 2 second PB in the 100 Breaststroke, followed by a fantastic 5 second PB in the 100m Freestyle.
Josh Cassidy (12) swam a brilliant 100m Breaststroke race, stripping over 10 seconds off his PB. He also secured a 4 second PB in the 100m Freestyle.
Luke Lannon (12) swimming in the 12-14 age group came in 3rd fastest 12 year-old in the 100m Backcrawl and 2nd fastest 12 year-old in the 100m Freestyle achieving a 2 second PB in a time of 1:12.02.
Year 10 Lorcan Doherty (14) was also representing his school for the first time at the Championships. He was very pleased with his performances in the 100m Breaststroke and Freestyle. He came 3rd in both heats and improved his PB times by 10 seconds in both events.
The Year 8 boys joined with Lorcan to compete in the 12-14 age group 200m Freestyle Relay producing a strong team performance.



Year 11 student Conal Walker (15) was delighted with his performance at the Schools Cup. He swam confidently and achieved PB’s in both of his events – 100m Freestyle and Breaststroke.
Jamie Lannon (15) stormed through his prelim swims in the 15-16 age category, qualifying for finals in the 100m Breaststroke and Freestyle. Jamie finished 4thoverall in the 100m Freestyle, improving his seeding from 5th to 4th and was the fastest 15 year-old boy. A very determined swim saw Jamie hit the wall as the fastest 15 year-old, winning the bronze medal in the 100m Breaststroke.

Representing Devenish College, Emma Speer swam as a 12 year old in the highly competitive 12-14 year old category. Emma was delighted with her performance, securing a PB in both her 100m Breaststroke and Freestyle. Emma finished as the sixth fastest 12 year old in her Breaststroke.

Hayden James (16), representing Saint Kevin's College, was thrilled to be selected for the tough 400m Freestyle event where he came in 17th place overall.
Swimming in the highly competitive 100m Freestyle event, he shaved 0.89 seconds off his previous time, placing him 18th in his age category. Hayden then knocked an impressive 2.54 seconds off his previous time in his favoured stroke, the 100m Butterfly, placing him in 17th place.

Cora Rooney (18) competing for Colaiste Colmchille, Ballyshannon in the Senior 17-19 year old category, was pleased to progress to finals in both her events. Cora, swam well in the heats of the 100m Backstroke to progress to the final seeded in first place. An exciting race in the final saw Cora finish in the Gold Medal position. Cora produced a new PB in the heats of the 100m Butterfly to progress to the final where she picked up a bronze medal. Cora is eligible for selection to compete as part of the Ulster Interprovincial Team for 2023 Schools team.
The commitment of the swimmers is to be commended. Many of them spend hours training in the pool every week with Enniskillen Lakelanders ASC and this dedication was evident in their super performances.
A squad of 33 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers attended the Swim Belfast Open Meet on Sunday the 15th of February in Lagan Valley Leisureplex, Lisburn. The gala was a great success for the Fermanagh swimmers who relished the opportunity to compete against swimmers from clubs across Ulster, Leinster & Connacht, returned home with numerous medals and personal best times.
Local Swimmers Sparkle for their Schools as Past & Present Lakelanders lead the way for Fermanagh at Swim Ulster’s Senior Schools’ Cup & Championships in Bangor
The Swim Ulster Schools Cup & Championships 2026 took place on Friday 6th February at Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex Bangor. Over 1000 swimmers from more than 130 schools across the province of Ulster took part in the one day event. Three local schools were part of the action with 22 local swimmers taking part.
On Saturday 31st January, 13 young swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club competed in Round 3 of the Swim Ulster Future Challengers Series at Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre, Belfast. The meet attracted over 450 swimmers aged 10–14 from across Ulster, all taking on the more challenging events of Individual Medley (IM), Backstroke and Butterfly.
The Lakelanders squad rose to the occasion, relishing the opportunity to race against strong provincial competition while aiming for personal best performances.
6 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers competed at Swim Ulster’s Open Long Course Meet at the Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex in Bangor on the 24 & 25th January. Swimmers from clubs all over Ireland attended this exciting start to the Long Course season and the Lakelanders were eager to race their fellow athletes in the fabulous 10 lane 50m pool at the Aurora.
A strong squad of Lakelanders junior swimmers took part in Swim Ulster Future Challengers Meet 2 at Omagh Leisure Centre on Saturday.
Coach Chelsey Weir was there to support the young swimmers who brought home a substantial haul of medal award pins and a raft of new personal times.
6 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers made the journey to the Coral Leisure Centre Monaghan for Sliabh Beagh Swimming Club’s Winter Cluster Meet on 6th & 7th December.
Swim Ulster Primary Schools Cup and Championship was held at the Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex, Bangor on Saturday 29th November 2025. Excited for this opportunity to represent their schools, 22 swimmers across 10 local schools headed to Bangor determined to do the South-West proud and qualify for the All-Ireland Championships held in Dublin in March. Although a school competition, all the students attending are committed members of the Enniskillen Lakelanders swimming club and mustered all their skills and training in competing against the best swimmers from schools across Ulster. A successful day saw 4 podium finishes and an amazing number of swimmers qualify for the All-Ireland primary school championship to be held at the National Aquatic Centre Dublin next year.
A squad of 10 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers attended Dungannon Swimming Club’s 40th Anniversary Gala on Sunday the 9th November at Dungannon Leisure Centre. The gala was a great success for the young swimmers who returned home with numerous personal bests.
Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club held their Autumn Junior Gala on Sunday 26th October, an event aimed at younger swimmers. This was the club’s first Gala in their new temporary base at Omagh Leisure Centre and there was much excitement among the swimmers from the outset with 37 swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders taking part. They were joined by competitors from nine other Ulster swimming clubs. For many of the 8-14 year-old competitors, this would be one their first experiences of individual competition, that all important first step for every sportsperson.
11 swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders swimming club made their way to the Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre in Belfast to compete at Swim Ulster's Aspiring Champions Meet; the first Gala of the season for swimmers aged 13 and over. The event was held over two days, 18th & 19th October. Coaches across Ulster use this gala to assess and monitor swimmers' skills, providing the scaffolding for the building blocks for success in the coming season.
All the work so far on skills and technique resulted in a slew of Swim Ulster Awards, personal bests and many top ten finishes for the Enniskillen Lakelanders.
