
The Stony grey soil of Monaghan yielded new PB's for the Lakelanders

Ten Enniskillen Lakelanders swimmers made the short trip over to Coral Leisure Centre in Monaghan to take part in the first Sliabh Beagh Junior Open Meet on Sat 06 April. They joined with 20 other clubs and over 120 other swimmers in what was to be a very successful meet for the Lakelanders. All swimmers were delighted with their performances and showed their hard work in the pool paying off with lots of PBs and well deserved medals making their way back to Fermanagh.
13 yr old Emilie Reihill had a great start to the afternoon in the 200m Freestyle: her current favourite stroke, achieving a 1.15 second PB, securing the Gold medal for her efforts in the age 13/14 group. Emilie continued her strong performance with an impressive 20.89 second PB in the 200m Breaststroke finishing 8th in the 13/14 age group, earning her 7th Division 2 time and a new Swim Ulster qualifying time.
Annabel Morrison, age 12, was swimming 200m Freestyle first, she had a very strong first 100 meters and managed to finish up with a 1 second PB but more importantly learning how to swim this distance. Annabel’s next event was 200m Breaststroke where she had great swim with a PB of almost 17 seconds to finish in a time of 3:17.70 placing her 5th amongst the 13/14 age group. Annabel looks forward to even more improvements at her next gala.
Hannah Lynch, age 10, was competing in the 12 and under category. In her first event 200m freestyle Hannah had a massive PB of 10secs to finish in a time of 3.08.36. Swimming in the 200m Breaststroke for the first time Hannah finished in a time of 4.11.10. Hannah placed in the top ten in both events and was also the fastest ten year old.
Cora Cassidy swam in 3 races, first was the 200m Freestyle, where a steady race brought an 8th place finish with 5 second PB. Next in the 200m Backstroke, another strong swim with consistent pace brought Cora a huge 16s PB and her first Irish Division 2 Qualifying time, but just shy of the podium in 4th place. Last of the day was the 200 IM, Cora was again in top form pulling a 7 Second PB and another top 10 finish.
Hayden James, age 12, swam well in the 200m Freestyle event and followed up with a strong swim in his first 200m Breaststroke, finishing in 9th place. Hayden will have gained valuable experience swimming this longer distance for the first time.
13 year old Ciosa McConnell swam in 3 events. The highlight for Ciosa was the 200m breaststroke where she not only won gold but achieved the qualifying standard for the Irish Division 1 National finals. She now has set her goals on repeating this at upcoming Ulster Long Course event. Ciosa also swam the 200m freestyle and individual medley events where she was placed 5th and 7th respectively. Not a bad days work for Ciosa as she continues her rehabilitation from recent injury.
Molly Johnston (14) followed her coach Aaron’s advice and swam in only one event, the 200m Breaststroke which she hasn’t competed in for quite a while. With a lot riding on this swim Molly took on the challenge and absolutely smashed her previous time earning her a new PB of 3:08:28 taking off a whopping 33 seconds. Molly won her heat in style by a length, picking up a silver medal. Molly has now qualified for Division 2 Irish Nationals, Ulster Age Groups Competition and will now move up to compete in Qualifying Galas.
Having competed well at long course all season, Jamie Lannon, aged 11, entered Sliabh Beagh to build experience for Division 2 in July, adjusting to the shorter pool distance, Jamie had steady swims in the 200m Freestyle and 200m Breaststroke coming 4th and 5th respectively. In the second session Jamie competing against boys 3 years his senior, hit a fantastic PB of 3.24.00s in the arduous 200m fly and won the gold medal.
12 year old Kiril Chursin swam in two events, a consistent pace in the 200m Freestyle saw Kiril finish in 8th place in the 13/14 category. Kiril followed this with an impressive swim in the 200m Breaststroke achieving a 5th place finish with a 4.71 second PB.
Eleven year old Nial Bruce took the opportunity to try out some new events at the meet, and log some baseline times in the 200m backstroke, and the 200m breast. In the 200m freestyle Nial finished with a 5 second PB, and he was delighted to finish the day with a massive 13 second PB in the 200m IM.
The Lakelanders left the meet on a high but know there is hard work ahead for the rest of the season. Chairperson Sara Lannon said ‘It is great to see so many Lakelanders competing at all levels and progressing to National championships. The commitment and discipline these swimmers have in their chosen sport is clearly seen in their fantastic results.’
