13 local swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders travelled to the Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex, Bangor to compete in Round 2 of Swim Ulster’s ‘Aspiring Champions’ Meet Series on 18th & 19th March. This spectacular 50m pool was the perfect venue for the many challenging events the Fermanagh swimmers were eager to dive into over the weekend.


Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club held their Spring Junior Gala on Sunday 5th March, an event aimed at younger swimmers. Right off the back of their recent Aquasprint victory in Downpatrick last month the junior swimmers were eager to race individually at their home pool.  Joining competitors from the local club were 14 visiting clubs from all over Ulster and Leinster. For many of the 8-14-year-old competitors, this would be one their first experiences of individual competition, that all important first step for every sportsperson.


Enniskillen Lakelanders’ first round of this season’s Aquasprint League, sponsored by Forest Feast, took place on Saturday 11th February away to Lecale Swimming Club at Down Leisure Centre Downpatrick. Aquasprint is a great starting point into competitions for the younger swimmers, with opportunity to swim 25m events in all strokes in individual and relay races. Forty-seven younger Lakelander swimmers born between 2015 and 2010 headed off on the bus full of excitement.


The Swim Ulster Schools Cup & Championships 2023 took place on Saturday 4th February at Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex Bangor. Over 830 swimmers from 121 schools across the province of Ulster took part in the one day event. Five Fermanagh schools were part of the action with 23 local swimmers taking part.


28 members of the Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club competed in Sunday’s Portadown Long Course Meet held at the South Lakes Leisure complex, Craigavon. This marked the beginning of the Long Course season for these swimmers who enjoyed the opportunity to compete in a 50m pool and for some it was a chance to secure qualification times for upcoming Summer National events.


Three swimmers from the Enniskillen Lakelanders Swim Club made the trip to Dublin's National Aquatic Centre for the Leinster LC meet. Joining a large number of swimmers from over 40 clubs across the Leinster region the Lakelanders were excited for their first Long Course Meet of the season.


Many Enniskillen Lakelanders swimmers were privileged to attend swimming stroke clinics with Daniel & Nathan Wiffen last week. Identical twins Nathan and Daniel are the younger brothers of Enniskillen Lakelanders’ Head Coach Ben Wiffen who was instrumental in bringing this exciting training opportunity to Lakelander swimmers in Enniskillen.


Swim Ireland’s 2022 Irish National Winter Championship took place at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre, Dublin from Thursday 15th – Saturday 17thDecember. Over 500 swimmers from both Ireland and overseas competed at the final National Championship meet of 2022. While a host of elite swimmers competed for National titles it was Daniel Wiffen’s incredible swim in the 800m Freestyle, becoming the first ever Irishman to break a European record, that stole the show. Without doubt there was a lot of cheering in Fermanagh as Enniskillen Lakelanders head coach Ben Wiffen watched his brother storm home.


27 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers made the journey through the frosty countryside to the Coral Leisure Centre Monaghan for the Sliabh Beagh Swimming Club’s Winter Cluster Meet on Sunday 11th December. 11 swimmers competed in the morning session aimed at 13 – 18 year olds where the Lakelander swimmers led the way in many of the events.


Last weekend saw 6 swimmers from the Enniskillen Lakelanders compete in the Ulster Short Course Championships held at Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre, Belfast. With almost 1,000 entries the three-day meet was approached by the local swimmers with confidence.
