
Swim Ireland’s 2022 Irish National Winter Championship took place at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre, Dublin from Thursday 15th – Saturday 17thDecember. Over 500 swimmers from both Ireland and overseas competed at the final National Championship meet of 2022. While a host of elite swimmers competed for National titles it was Daniel Wiffen’s incredible swim in the 800m Freestyle, becoming the first ever Irishman to break a European record, that stole the show. Without doubt there was a lot of cheering in Fermanagh as Enniskillen Lakelanders head coach Ben Wiffen watched his brother storm home.
27 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers made the journey through the frosty countryside to the Coral Leisure Centre Monaghan for the Sliabh Beagh Swimming Club’s Winter Cluster Meet on Sunday 11th December. 11 swimmers competed in the morning session aimed at 13 – 18 year olds where the Lakelander swimmers led the way in many of the events.
Last weekend saw 6 swimmers from the Enniskillen Lakelanders compete in the Ulster Short Course Championships held at Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre, Belfast. With almost 1,000 entries the three-day meet was approached by the local swimmers with confidence.
Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club held their first fundraising Gala of the season on Sunday 23rd October, with an event aimed at younger swimmers. Joining competitors from the local club were 9 visiting clubs from around the Ulster region. For many of the 8-14-year-old competitors, this would be their first taste of individual competition, that all important first step for every sportsperson.
9 local swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders swimming club made their way to the Lagan Valley Leisureplex in Lisburn to compete in Swim Ulster's Aspiring Champions Meet; the first Gala of the season for swimmers aged 13 and over. The event was held over two days, 15th & 16th October. Coaches across Ulster use this gala to assess and monitor swimmers' skills, providing the scaffolding for the building blocks for success in the coming season. All the work so far on skills and technique resulted in decent personal bests and many top ten finishes for the Enniskillen Lakelanders.
Swim Ulster Primary Schools Cup and Championship was held in the Bangor Aurora complex on Saturday 8th October 2022. The last time this championship was held was in 2019 before Covid took hold and halted life as our children knew it. Excited for this opportunity to compete again, 17 swimmers across 7 Enniskillen schools headed to Bangor, determined to do the Southwest proud and qualify for the All-Ireland Championships held in Dublin in March. Although a school competition, all the students attending are committed members of the Enniskillen Lakelanders swimming club and mustered all their skills and training in competing against the best swimmers from schools across Ulster. A successful day saw 2 podium finishes and 5 swimmers qualify for the All-Ireland primary school championship in March 2023.
On Saturday 1st October 18 swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club made their way to the beautiful facilities at the South Lakes Leisure Centre in Craigavon for the first of Swim Ulster’s Future Challengers’ Series of Galas. This was the younger Lakelanders’ first swimming competition of the season and they relished the opportunity, returning with great memories and a slew of new personal best swims (PBs).
Swim Ireland's 2022 Irish Summer National Championships got underway on Wednesday 20th July 2022 at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre, Dublin. The five-day event saw 865 swimmers from over 100 clubs compete from all over Ireland to as far afield as Dubai. The path to nationals is paved by hundreds of hours of pool and land training so to qualify for this prestigious competition is a huge achievement for all swimmers. With this being the first National Championships since 2019 there was high excitement and some nerves among the eight Enniskillen Lakelanders who had qualified. Nonetheless in the experienced hands of head coach Ben Wiffen, the Lakelanders did not fail to impress, bringing home two golds, two silvers and a bronze medal and multiple PBs back to their club.
As temperatures were rising across the country last week, 4 Enniskillen Lakelanders made the trip to Limerick for Swim Irelands Summer National Division 2 Competition. Joining 770 swimmers from 98 clubs the 5-day meet took place at the University of Limerick Sports Arena. This was the first Summer National event since 2019 and there was a great buzz around the venue creating a fantastic atmosphere for competitors and coaches alike.
With the 2021/2022 swimming season coming to an end, the finale for the competitive swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders is the Irish Summer National competitions. These competitions will take place across two meets in July with Irish National Division 2 taking place in Limerick, followed by Irish Summer Nationals in Dublin. Summer National competitions last took place in 2019 so there is great excitement among the 13 local swimmers who have qualified to compete at these events.

A squad of 20 swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders ASC made a big splash at the Swim Belfast Invitational 2026, held at Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre, Belfast, on Sunday 7th June, delivering a series of outstanding performances against strong competition.
The Lakelanders rose to the occasion in style, returning home with an impressive haul of medals and personal bests (PBs), highlighting the hard work, determination, and commitment of these talented young athletes.
Banbridge Open Long Course Meet took place in Craigavon’s South Lakes Leisure Centre on Saturday the 6th of June.
A squad of 11 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers, along with Head Coach Fionna Orr, made their way to the fabulous South Lakes Leisure Centre long course (50m) swimming pool for the final club meet of the season for the older swimmers. This meet provided the final opportunity for competitive swimmers to qualify for Swim Ireland's Irish Summer National competitions. As a bonus Banbridge swimming club had extended their invitation to clubs from all over Ireland. The chance to achieve qualifying times and compete against the best in Ireland was too good to miss.
A squad of 9 swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club attended the Ulster Age Group and Senior LC Championships at the Bangor Aurora Leisure Complex on 1st, 2nd & 3rd May. Competitors from across 32 clubs in Ulster met the tough qualification standards to take part in this key meet over three days, targeting Ulster podium spots, and those important Summer National qualification times.
Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club held their Spring Junior Gala on Sunday 26th April, an event aimed at younger swimmers. As the Lakelanders approach the first year complete at their temporary base at Omagh Leisure Centre and there was much excitement among the swimmers from the outset with 41 swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders taking part. They were joined by competitors from eleven other Ulster swimming clubs. For many of the 8-14 year-old competitors, this would be one their first experiences of individual competition, that all important first step for every sportsperson.
Portadown ASC and Lurgan ASC hosted the South Lake Open Meet 2026 at South Lake Leisure Centre, Craigavon on Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th April. A total of 26 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers competed over the two day meet.
Saturday morning saw fantastic swimming by 11 of our younger athletes competing in a range of 25m races in the short course format. Many PBs were smashed with the young Lakelanders doing their club proud in the pool.
On Saturday 21st March, a group of 14 young swimmers from Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club took part in Round 4 of the Swim Ulster Future Challengers Series, held at Lagan Valley Leisureplex in Lisburn. The competition drew over 450 swimmers between the ages of 10 and 14 from across Ulster.
Participants competed in a range of more demanding events, including Individual Medley (IM), Breaststroke, and Freestyle. The Lakelanders swimmers performed with determination throughout the meet, embracing the challenge of competing against a high standard of provincial opposition while striving to achieve personal best times.
11 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers travelled to the Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex, Bangor to compete in Round 2 of Swim Ulster’s ‘Aspiring Champions’ Meet Series on 14th & 15th March. This spectacular 50m pool was the perfect venue for the many challenging events the Fermanagh swimmers were eager to dive into over the weekend.
A squad of 33 Enniskillen Lakelanders’ swimmers attended the Swim Belfast Open Meet on Sunday the 15th of February in Lagan Valley Leisureplex, Lisburn. The gala was a great success for the Fermanagh swimmers who relished the opportunity to compete against swimmers from clubs across Ulster, Leinster & Connacht, returned home with numerous medals and personal best times.
